What a gardener in Bayside should actually do

Most people who search for a gardener are not after a landscaper, and they are not after someone who only mows. They want the hedges kept to a line, the beds weeded and mulched, the lawn cut properly and the whole lot left tidy, by one reliable person who turns up when they say they will. That is the gap Wilson's Mowing fills across the Bayside suburbs.

I am a one-man business based in Black Rock 3193. I do the quoting and I do the work, so what you are promised on the phone is what turns up at the gate. Garden maintenance is not a sideline bolted onto mowing. On most regular visits the hedges and the beds take as long as the grass does, and they are what people notice from the street.

I work from Brighton and Brighton East down through Hampton, Hampton East, Sandringham and Black Rock to Beaumaris, on down the coast through Mentone and Parkdale to Mordialloc, and inland through Highett and Cheltenham to Moorabbin. Each of those pages has notes on what tends to come up in that suburb.

Hedge trimming and shaping

Bayside gardens lean on hedges. Lilly pilly and ficus screens between neighbours, box borders along a path, a murraya or westringia hedge under the front windows. They look sharp for about three weeks after a cut and then start to blur at the edges. I trim hedges back to a clean, even line, keep the tops level and the faces square or gently rounded to suit the plant, and clear away every bit of the trimmings before I go. Tall screening hedges are done properly from a platform, not by hacking at whatever can be reached from the ground.

Timing matters as much as technique. Most hedges want a tidy in spring and a firmer cut in late summer, with a lighter touch through the cooler months so they are not left thin going into winter. If a hedge has been let go for a season or two, I will tell you honestly how far it can be brought back in one visit and what it will need after that.

Garden beds, clean-ups and weed treatments

Garden bed maintenance is the slow, steady work that keeps a garden looking cared for: hand weeding, cutting back spent growth, topping up mulch where it has thinned, and keeping the edge between bed and lawn crisp. Done a little at a time it never turns into a big job, and the beds frame the lawn instead of competing with it.

When it has already become a big job, a garden clean-up is the reset. Overgrown beds are cut back, weeds pulled out by the root rather than snapped off, dead material removed, paths and paving cleared, and the green waste taken away so you are not left with a pile to deal with. One visit brings the garden back to the point where a regular round can keep it there.

For weeds in the lawn itself, and for pests such as lawn grubs that eat a lawn from the roots up, I offer chemical weed and pest treatments. They are applied carefully and only where they are needed, with the right product for the grass type. I will always tell you what I am using and why, and I will tell you just as plainly when a lawn is better left to recover on its own.

How a regular garden visit works

A regular visit can be weekly, fortnightly or monthly, whatever suits the garden and the time of year. A regular visit covers whatever we have agreed on, and it runs in the same order each time so nothing gets missed: lawn mowed and edged first, hedges trimmed if they are on the list, beds weeded and tidied, then paths, driveway and patio blown clean before I leave.

You do not need to be home. Side gate access and a quick message beforehand is usually all it takes, and I will let you know if anything in the garden needs your attention. Every job is fully insured with $10 million public liability cover, and I work Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

One-off visits are welcome too. Plenty of people start with a single clean-up to see how the garden comes up, then decide whether a regular round makes sense for them.

Getting a garden ready for sale, auction or the end of a lease

A property on the market is judged from the footpath, and the photos are taken from there too. Hedges clipped square, beds weeded and freshly mulched, lawn cut and edged, paths swept clean: it all reads as a house that has been looked after. I prepare gardens for auctions, private sales and open inspections across Bayside, and for end of lease handbacks where the agent has a checklist and a bond is riding on the result. Tell me the date and I will work back from it.

Wilson's Mowing has 60 Google reviews with a 5.0 rating, and I would rather let those speak than make promises here. Quotes are free and there is no obligation. Because I am local, the quote reflects what I actually see in your garden, not a guess from a photo. Call 0452 652 494 or use the form below.
