Walk from Bay Road down to Sandringham station on a weekday morning and you pass a lot of front gardens. That is the thing about this suburb: the front of the house is on show. Neighbours, commuters, dog walkers and kids on scooters all go past the same nature strip and the same front edge every day. A clean kerb line and a straight edge along the path do more for first impressions here than almost anything else, and that is where I start every job.

Nature strips and street frontages in Sandringham

The nature strips here tend to be long, with established street trees and the odd power pole to work around. Some run the full width of a double block. Others are narrow strips between a picket fence and the kerb. Either way, they need a careful mow and a proper edge along the kerb and the footpath, not just a quick pass with the mower.

I trim around tree bases and poles by hand, edge both sides of the footpath, and blow the clippings off the path and the road so nothing is left for the next person walking past.

Mowing for weatherboards, units and townhouses

Sandringham is a real mix. There are period weatherboards on bigger blocks with buffalo or kikuyu out the front, brick unit blocks with shared lawns and a strip down the side, and newer townhouses with a small patch of turf and a lot of edges. Each one needs a different approach.

On the older blocks I set the mower height to suit the grass and the season, so the lawn stays thick through a dry Bayside summer instead of being scalped. Shared lawns at unit blocks get the same care as a private one, with the bins and letterboxes worked around. Townhouse lawns are mostly edging and tidy work, and the difference between a neat one and a scruffy one is obvious from the footpath.

Sandy soil is common this close to the beach, so lawns dry out quickly and weeds take hold in bare patches. I keep an eye on that and can add weed and pest treatments when a lawn needs a hand.

Hedges, garden beds and garden clean-ups

Most front gardens in Sandringham have more than lawn. There are box hedges along the fence line, pittosporum screens between townhouses, lilly pillies, coastal natives and the odd rose bed. If the hedge is shaggy, the edge of the lawn can be perfect and the frontage still looks unloved.

Hedge trimming, garden bed maintenance and garden clean-ups are all part of what I do. That means hedges cut to a clean line, beds weeded and tidied, pathways and driveways cleared of leaves and clippings, and the whole lot taken away. If you are preparing a house for auction, sale or the end of a lease, I can do a full tidy of the front and back so it presents properly for the photos and the open.

Regular visits or a one-off clean-up

A regular round suits most Sandringham gardens. Weekly suits a fast-growing lawn in spring, fortnightly keeps most gardens in good order year round, and monthly works for low-growth yards or over winter. A regular booking means you never have to think about it, and the lawn and edges always look the same from the street.

One-off visits are also welcome. That might be a catch-up mow after a holiday, a spring garden clean-up, or getting a rental ready between tenants. Tell me what you need and I will quote it as a single job.
