Inland lawns in Moorabbin, and why they behave differently
Drive ten minutes west from Moorabbin and you are on sandy coastal ground that drains almost as soon as the rain stops. Around South Road and Moorabbin Reserve it is a different story. The soil here is heavier and holds onto water, so lawns stay damp for longer after a wet week, grow in thicker flushes through spring, and compact under foot traffic in a way sandy lawns never do. Mowing and treating an inland lawn the same way you would a beach-side one does the lawn no favours.
In practice that changes a few things. I lift the cutting height on soft, wet ground so the mower does not scalp the lawn or leave wheel ruts. I keep a closer eye on clumping clippings, which heavier soil encourages. And I watch for the weeds that love damp, compacted lawns, like winter grass, clover and bindii, because they take hold differently here than they do closer to the bay.
Garden clean-ups, hedges and weed treatments
Moorabbin has a real mix of housing. There are older weatherboard and brick homes on generous blocks, often with established gardens that have had a few decades to grow, sitting beside renovated places with newer plantings and neat hedges out the front. Both kinds need steady care, and both tend to need a proper clean-up at some point in the year.
The garden side of the work covers:
- Hedge Trimming, from low box borders to tall screening hedges along a fence line
- Garden Bed Maintenance, keeping beds weeded, edged and tidy so they never become a chore
- Garden Cleanups, for a yard that has got away from you or a property being readied for new owners
- Weed and Pest Treatments, which matter more on heavier soil where broadleaf weeds settle in quickly
- Auction, Sale and End of Lease Preparation, so the place looks its best on inspection day
Weed treatments on inland lawns work best when they are timed well and followed up, rather than done once and forgotten. If weeds are the main thing bothering you, say so when you get in touch and I will quote the treatment alongside the mowing.
Regular mowing or a one-off visit
Most lawns around here do best on a regular schedule, and because the heavier soil grows grass in thicker bursts, the interval matters. Weekly suits a fast-growing lawn through the warmer months. Fortnightly is the most common choice for an average block. Monthly works for slower lawns or quieter times of year. A regular booking means the grass never gets long enough to clump, scalp or go to seed, and you stop thinking about it altogether.
One-off visits are welcome too. That might be a catch-up cut after a holiday, a tidy before guests arrive, or a full clean-up ahead of a sale or an end of lease inspection. There is no pressure to commit to anything ongoing. Plenty of people start with a single visit and decide from there.
What a lawn visit covers
Every lawn visit is a complete job, not a quick lap with the mower. The standard list is:
- Lawn Mowing at a height suited to the grass type, the season and how wet the ground is
- Edging along paths, garden beds, fences and the kerb for a clean, defined line
- Pathway and Driveway Cleanup, with clippings blown off and collected rather than left to wash into the gutter
The nature strip out the front gets the same treatment, mown to match the lawn and edged along the kerb.
