Walk down most streets between the Concourse and Ricketts Point and you will notice the same thing. The lawns are there, but it is the hedges that frame the place. Pittosporum and lilly pilly along the side fences, coastal tea-tree and banksia thickening up near the front, a wall of green between one mid-century house and the next. Plenty of gardens here are more hedge than lawn, and if a visit only mows, the job is only half done. So when I come to Beaumaris, the hedge shears come out before the mower does.

A visit here is never just a quick mow. On a typical property it means the lawns are mown and edged, the paths and driveway are blown off and left clean, and if hedges are on the booking they are checked and cut where they need it. Hedges and screening in Beaumaris gardens
Blocks here are bigger than in most of Bayside, and the houses sit well back from the street. That leaves a lot of boundary, and over the decades people have filled it with hedging. Some of it is formal and clipped flat. Some of it is coastal tea-tree that has been allowed to go a bit wild, which looks lovely until it starts leaning over the driveway or shading out the lawn underneath.
Hedge trimming in Beaumaris is a proper job, not a quick once-over. It means getting the top level and the faces straight, cutting back to a line the hedge can hold for a couple of months, and clearing every clipping from the beds and lawn below. Tall screening hedges between neighbours need care on both sides of the fence line, and I take the time to shape them rather than hack them back. Banksia and other natives want a lighter touch than a ficus or a pittosporum, so I treat them differently.
If the hedges are the main reason you are calling, say so. I will quote the hedge work on its own merits, not as an afterthought to the mowing.
Lawns on the bigger Beaumaris blocks
A larger block means a larger lawn, and the sandy coastal soil around here dries out fast through summer and goes patchy under big trees. I mow at a height that suits the grass and the season rather than scalping it, and I vary the direction so the lawn does not develop ruts. Edges along garden beds, paths and the driveway are cut cleanly so the whole thing reads as finished, not just shorter.
Leaf litter from tea-tree and gums builds up quickly, especially in the shaded back corners. Pathway and driveway cleanup can be booked with any visit, and garden bed maintenance added so the beds stay as neat as the lawn.
Regular visits or a one-off tidy
Most Beaumaris gardens do best on a regular round. I offer weekly, fortnightly or monthly bookings, and the right one depends on how fast your grass grows and how many hedges you have. Fortnightly suits a lot of properties through the growing season, with hedge shaping slotted in every second or third visit so nothing ever gets away from you.
