Mordialloc, the southern end of the round
Mordialloc is as far south as I go. Wilson's Mowing is based in Black Rock 3193, and the round runs down the coast through Beaumaris, Mentone and Parkdale and turns around at the creek. Being the end of the line is not a disadvantage. It means Mordialloc jobs get grouped together on the same day, so the visit is unhurried and I am not racing off to the other side of the bay.
It is a suburb with a bit of everything: weatherboards and brick homes in the streets off Main Street, newer units and townhouses closer to the station, and the houses along Mordialloc Creek and down near the pier that have the water almost in the backyard. Each of them needs a slightly different approach, and that is part of what makes the work here interesting.
Lawns by the creek and lawns by the highway
Ground near the creek and the foreshore is sandy and drains fast, and the lawns there are mostly couch that wants a regular, moderate cut and a sharp edge. Further inland towards the Nepean Highway the soil holds more water, kikuyu takes over, and the growth through spring can get ahead of you inside a fortnight. I cut to suit the grass and the season, keep the mower blades sharp so the leaf is cut rather than torn, catch the clippings, and leave paths and driveways blown clean.
Nature strips along the wider Mordialloc streets are common, and they get mown to match the front lawn and edged along the kerb.
Rentals, sales and getting a property presentable
Mordialloc has a lot of rental properties and a steady turnover of sales. If you are an owner, a tenant with a final inspection coming up, or an agent with a listing, I prepare gardens for end of lease handbacks, open inspections and auctions: lawn cut and edged, hedges clipped, beds weeded and mulched, paths swept, green waste gone. Tell me the date and I will work back from it. A tidy garden is the first thing in the photos and the first thing a buyer or an inspector sees from the footpath.
Hedges, beds and the gardener side
Plenty of people in Mordialloc searching for a gardener want the hedges, beds and lawn kept by one reliable person, not a landscaper and not just a quick mow. Hedge trimming, garden bed maintenance, weed and pest treatments and the occasional proper clean-up are all things I do here. Hedges come back to a clean face and a level top, beds are weeded by hand and mulched where they need it, and everything I cut comes away with me. If a garden has got away, a one-off clean-up brings it back to a point where a regular visit can keep it tidy.
